Who knows them all, the (AC)³ers, the trees and so on?
Today, I’d like to introduce you to someone who knows them all. Every single one of them in the ‘boat’, in the park…
Marlen, we’ve read your name quite a few times on the blog. Could you please introduce yourself briefly?
Of course! My name is Marlen Brückner and I am a meteorologist from Leipzig. I am originally from the beautiful Ore Mountains and work here at the Institute of Meteorology as a scientific coordinator in the (AC)³ project.
Do you sometimes travel abroad?
Oh yes, that’s the really cool part of my job. Before I got more involved in coordination, I sailed the world’s oceans a lot on the Polarstern myself and was able to gain experience. Within (AC)³, I mainly support the professionals on campaigns or document our exciting and important work for the general public. This gave me the unique opportunity to walk on Arctic sea ice myself, to travel through the ice on the icebreaker Polarstern, to fly in an aeroplane to 89.5°N and to see and feel the beauty of the Arctic. Not many people can say that, can they?
What has been your most valuable professional experience so far?
It’s working with people themselves. As a scientist, you’re more concerned with data, evaluations, theories and solutions. You’re a bit in your own world.
As a scientific coordinator, I meet people from very different fields who sometimes need to be addressed or treated differently. I am really proud of how the people at (AC)³ have developed together over the years, what we have experienced and created together. I hope that this will enable us to make a real contribution to improving the way we treat our natural environment and climate.
And what do you do when you’re not working? You can often be seen in the park… 🙂
Yes, I know every tree in the park by name, so to speak. I love being outdoors, even in wind and weather. And because we have a dog, it’s easy to combine the two and you don’t get bored. I love cycling and often go for a run to clear my head. At the weekend, however, my favourite place is by the lake.
