Mika’s journey to the Arctic
Guess who just made it all the way to Longyearbyen in Svalbard? Mika!
But Mika’s Arctic arrival didn’t exactly go as planned…
Mika landed safely in the freezing cold, but the luggage decided to take a vacation somewhere else! Imagine stepping out into the Arctic air, and find out that your thick winter coat, thermal socks, and toothbrush are flying to who-knows-where.
Luckily, our amazing friends from the (AC)³ came to the rescue. They dressed Mika up in layers of oversized expedition gear, creating the look of a giant, very cozy walking marshmallow!
Mika traveled all the way up north to visit the (AC)³ team, who have just kicked off the COMPEX aircraft campaign! They are doing some incredibly cool climate research using an awesome, specially equipped research plane called Polar 5. It’s basically a high-tech flying laboratory!
To celebrate the start of the campaign, the team gave Mika the ultimate surprise: an invitation to join them on an actual science flight! They took off from Longyearbyen and flew all the way over to Ny-Ålesund. Looking out the window of the Polar 5, Mika was completely speechless while taking in the vast, cracking patterns of the sea ice, enormous glaciers, and the endless snowy peaks of the Svalbard mountains from above.
But this trip isn’t just about the breathtaking views! Mika is actually here on a special mission. Over the next few weeks, Mika will be sending us regular updates to show all of us exactly what goes on behind the scenes of a huge research campaign like COMPEX right from day one.
You see, science isn’t just about the neat and tidy final results we read in textbooks. It takes a massive amount of effort, freezing early mornings, fixing complicated instruments in the snow, and incredible teamwork to gather this climate data. Mika is going to be our inside scoop on the daily grind and the hard work these dedicated scientists put in every single day to understand our changing Arctic. So stay tuned!
Now, let’s just cross our fingers that Mika’s suitcase eventually finds its way to the ice!
